The Harper's marriage is threatened when Susan learns that the poem that made her fall in love with Ben years ago was not an original. To make amends, Ben joins a poetry group but risks forming the wrong kind of couplet.
When the local paper announces Ben's death, he sees it as an opportunity to avoid all the things he doesn't want to do. Meanwhile, Nick is more distressed by Susan's efforts to transform his old room into a nursery.
Normally nobody in the Harper family would willingly set foot in Nick's flat. But when Susan's mother comes to stay, it suddenly seems more attractive.
Susan cons Ben into taking dancing lessons, but soon finds out that, in their case, it takes more than two to tango. Roger tries to summon the courage to ask out Abi, but she seems blissfully unaware of his advances.

For the first time in longer than they'd care to remember, Ben and Susan have the house to themselves for the whole weekend. Unfortunately saucy plans to re-ignite their love life soon falter.
It's Ben's birthday and everyone is taking his request for no fuss literally, neglecting to buy him any presents. Plus, Janey is home for the weekend with a new friend, but nobody is sure of the nature of their relationship.

Susan is worried when Michael takes a shine to Becky. While Ben doesn't see this as a problem, they're both surprised when Michael comes home with something rather more ominous that a love bite.
Ben deals with toothache while preparing to make a speech at the Dentist Association conference. Susan is peeved about her role as shepherd number two in the nativity play. But how Nick landed the role of Jesus is a mystery.
Having been turned away from Janey's door when they try to visit her at university, Ben and Susan book into a hotel under assumed names. But it soon becomes apparent that this is not the only false assumption being made.
Abi's college assignment is to make a documentary about the everyday life of an everyday family. With the Harpers as the subject, home movies have a tendency to look more like horror films.
With Janey away at university, Susan is depressed to find she is now the only woman in the Harper house. Much to her husband's consternation, she eyes Ben's cousin's daughter Abi as the ideal solution to Janey's empty room.
Susan talks Ben into offering free dentistry services to Michael's school auction, but Ben quickly rues the donation upon seeing a former patient with severe halitosis bidding for the double session in his dentist's chair.
