Many battles were fought out on the banks of the Rhine in 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden. It was the code name for a large Allied offensive which aimed to advance from liberated Belgium straight to the middle of the Netherlands and then turn off towards Germany. Although Market Garden ultimately failed, the allies did finally cross the Rhine in early 1945 and advanced towards Berlin. We tell the secrets behind the lines of the battleground, like the Germans who were so sick of persecution they assumed fake British identities to fight against their own countrymen and the story of Kate ter Horst who allowed her small home to be used as an allied hospital which earned her the nickname, the Angel of Arnhem.
